Stars Who've Battled Cancer

Lance Armstrong Rides Again - Lance Armstrong had already won two Tour de France stages when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer that had spread to his lungs, abdomen, and brain in 1996. He staged a major comeback in 1998, and won the Tour a record-breaking seven consecutive times from 1999 to 2005.

Christina Applegate Is Back to Business as Usual - The actress confirmed in August 2008 that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a double mastectomy that month, she was declared cancer-free and back to "business as usual" by an ABC spokesman.

Melissa Etheridge Says 'Hallelujah!' - The singer was diagnosed with cancer in October 2004. After undergoing chemotherapy, she did a TV interview in October 2005 in which her hair had grown back and she praised the support she got from wife Tammy Lynn Michaels.

Ethan Zohn Is a Survivor - In May, it was announced that the "Survivor: Africa" winner was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer called CD20-positive Hodgkin's lymphoma. He has started chemotherapy.

Farrah Fawcett Loses Her Battle - The actress was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006, began treatment, and was declared cancer-free four months later. In May 2007, however, a malignant polyp was discovered in the treated area. Fawcett tried aggressive unorthodox treatments in Germany, but was rushed to an L.A. hospital in April 2009. She died on June 25, 2009.

Patrick Swayze Doesn't Give Up - In January 2008, the actor was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but he seemed to make what he called a "miracle" recovery within months. In April 2009, however, he was told the cancer had spread to his liver.

Maura Tierney Focuses on Treatment - In September 2009, the actress released a statement saying she was dropping out of the new NBC "Parenthood" to focus on her treatment for breast cancer.

Gene Wilder, Repeat Survivor - The comic actor was treated for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1999. After chemotherpay and a stem-cell transplant, he announced in March 2005 that the cancer was in complete remission. Wilder's wife Gilda Radner died of ovarian cancer in 1989.

Elizabeth Taylor Beats a Brain Tumor - The Hollywood icon's doctors found a benign brain tumor in 1997, with the announcement coming almost on the eve of her 65th birthday. Successful surgery excised it.

Shirley Temple Fights Breast Cancer - Child actress-turned-diplomat Shirley Temple Black successfully fought breast cancer in 1972, and was one of the first celebrities to bring public awareness to the disease.

Rod Stewart Clears His Throat - The pop singer was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 1999, and underwent surgery in 2000. The surgery threatened his voice, and Stewart had to re-learn how to sing.

Sharon Osbourne Is One Tough Bird - Ozzy Osbourne's wife and tough-as-nails manager was diagnosed with colon cancer in July 2002, which later spread to her lymph nodes. Her illness was especially hard on Ozzy and son Jack.

Sheryl Lives to Crow About It - Singer Sheryl Crow was diagnosed with breast cancer and treated for it in 2006, fighting it with the help of radiation therapy. She had been dating cancer survivor Lance Armstrong since 2003, but their relationship ended that year.

Tom Green Gets Through With a Sense of Humor - In March 2000, the outrageous MTV personality was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He made a irreverent one-hour special about his treatment, which was acclaimed by critics for its candidness and for teaching young men to check themselves regularly.

Olivia Newton-John Comes Back - In 1992, Newton-John was diagnosed with breast cancer, and since her struggles with the disease has become one of the the most public advocates of breast-cancer research.

Suzanne Somers Is Doing OK - In spring 2001, the actress underwent surgery and radiation therapy for breast cancer. She used mistletoe injections instead of chemotherapy after her treatment.

Kylie Minogue Battles Cancer With a Smile - The Australian singer was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, forcing her to postpone a tour, and her battle with the disease even drew comment from the prime minister. She recently announced her first North American tour.
